Dementia Support
[ds2024.kesland.info]
This list of hints and tips works for me but may not work for everybody. But I hope you find some of them, at least, helpful and if you email me with some of your suggestions, I will add them (anonymously, unless you want it otherwise). This list is in a rough order of priority
- Each morning, I try to meet up in a coffee bar for a coffee, chat and mutual support with 'cafe friends'
- A 'smart' TV with YouTube (paid version) on it gives access to all kinds of music concerts, films etc.
- Having an almost regimented routine helps (lunch at 1.30pm, afternoon tea at 4.00pm etc.)
- I fill afternoons with 'Sky News', followed by some comedy programs followed by a choice of (classical) music concert
- I have a 'weighted blanket' useful for panic attacks/fits of depression/ anger outbursts
[This can be supplemented by sitting on a sofa and giving a hug!]
- The Admiral nurses have been an excellent source of advice, help and signposting
- Adult Social Services should be contacted to see if a care package can be put in place (at a cost)
- Occupational Therapists should be be able to arrange for simple home adaptations e.g. a fitted rail in the shower, support for WC's
- All carers are legally entitled to have an assessment made of their own care needs (to ensure continuity of care for the patient)
- Not tried yet - 'Fiddle boxes', 'simple illustrated childrens books'
This is only a start. I will add in other suggestions as and when you send them to me and when other things occur to me.
